3 Tips for Taking a Group Whitewater Rafting

Rafting in the Smokies is the Real Deal!

Whitewater rafting is an amazing, adrenaline-inducing recreation to enjoy with a group of the people close to you, whether they are colleagues, employees, friends, or family members! However, if you’ve never gone rafting before, it can be intimidating rounding up your friends and coordinating a trip. Today we’re helping you take out some of the guesswork by sharing our top three tips for taking a group whitewater rafting.

Coordinate with your group

When dealing with a group of people, it’s important to have a leader who will communicate the trip details, handle logistics, and set realistic expectations. Choose someone to coordinate booking the dates, times and locations of your trip. This will help ensure that everyone is on the same page and your trip goes smoothly.

The maximum number of people per raft at Rafting in the Smokies is six, plus one guide, so if your group is bigger than this, you may want to figure out ahead of time who will be rafting together.

Dress and Pack Smart

The last thing you want is your outfit to ruin your time on the river. Here are a few tips to remember when picking out your clothing to ensure you have an enjoyable time.

  • Try to avoid wearing cotton and jeans, as they retain water, weigh you down, and draw heat from your body.
  • No Crocs, flip-flops or bare feet allowed. Water shoes or river sandals are ideal.
  • Avoid wearing sunglasses or eyewear without the appropriate straps to keep them attached to your head in the midst of the action. We sell straps in our shop on-site.
  • Synthetic, quick-dry materials, and swimwear that offers good coverage are recommended.

Don’t forget to pack a change of clothes, towels, and plenty of water to hydrate before and after the trip!

Set Aside Time for Other Activities!

As you plan your trip, be sure to allow time to take advantage of the other activities at Rafting in the Smokies. We have a variety of activities to choose from for people of all ages including: Rock Climbing Wall, our High Elements Ropes Challenge Course, the Zipline Canopy Tour, and Family Adventure Island.
