What to expect on a whitewater rafting trip

Rafting in the Smokies is the Real Deal!

Your first trip to Rafting in the Smokies can be a little intimidating, especially if you have never been whitewater rafting before. Put your worries aside, because our goal is for you to have a good time! This post specifically highlights tips so you can come prepared and ready to make memories that will last a lifetime.

  1. Make sure you don’t rely on GPS to get here. We have directions listed on the website that will send you to our Rafting Outpost in Hartford, TN faster than Google Maps! If you come through the Foothills Parkway you’ll have some epic photo opportunities from scenic overlooks. Plan ahead, because we need you here at least 45 minutes before your rafting adventure starts.
  2. Don’t forget to fill out and sign the liability waiver and have it ready when you arrive. We do have plenty of waivers on-site, but you might need to wait in line. Having the liability waiver completed  and signed will make checking in a breeze.
  3. Leave your valuables where you’re staying or in the car. Remember to lock your car and leave your keys with us. We don’t any of your items to get lost or waterlogged.
  4. Make sure you’re wearing something comfortable that you don’t mind getting wet. We do have changing rooms, so feel free to bring another set of clothes and extra shoes. We recommend lake/water shoes or river sandals (no Crocs, flip-flops or bare feet). If you plan on ziplining or participating in the High Elements Ropes Challenge Course you’ll need closed-toe shoes that are secured around your ankles and knee-length shorts. If you have eyewear, make sure you use a retainer. If you happen to forget anything we have many of these items available for sale in our retail store at the Outpost.
  5. When you’re checked in, we’ll call out the groups by start time. Next, we will organize you and your party and assign you to one of our experienced river guides. They’ll walk you through what to expect and provide some safety instructions on how to sit in the raft and hold onto your paddle. You’ll be given a helmet and life preserver and they will ensure everything fits correctly.
  6. For the Upper Pigeon excursion, we’ll drive you to the launch site at the Powerhouse. You’ll stay on the bus while we unload rafts. For the Lower Pigeon Family Float, you’ll go to the Family Adventure Island to cast off. You’ll get a quick lesson in paddling techniques and then the action begins!
  7. The Upper Pigeon rafters will continue to the River Outpost, while the Lower Pigeon participants will ride the bus back to the River Outpost. Here, you can view and purchase trip photos or engage in another activity.

We hope this list will make you feel at ease when you come to visit us. Enjoy the setting, learn about interesting facts as you let the river guide you, and share the stories of your adventure with others!
