Polar Express Train Ride

Rafting in the Smokies is the Real Deal!

As Christmas approaches, give your kids the experience every child dreams of—the opportunity to ride on the Polar Express! The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers an exclusive holiday train ride modeled after the beloved film. If you’re in the Smoky Mountains area around Christmastime, you won’t want to miss this magical adventure. Even the adults in your party are likely to leave amazed. Read on for details about this amazing Christmas experience!

What to Expect

The Polar Express train ride is a 1.25 hour experience from start to finish. You’ll board at the Bryson City train depot before traveling through the magical winter landscape to the “North Pole.” During the journey, the movie soundtrack will transport your family into the world of the Polar Express, and you’ll snack on hot cocoa and freshly baked cookies as you watch the cold scenery rush by. When the train arrives at the North Pole, Santa will make a special visit to the children on the train! Each of your kids will get a silver sleigh bell, just like in the movie. The whole train ride is designed to transport you and your family into the story of the Polar Express!

How to Plan

Keep in mind when planning your trip that pricing is more affordable at off-peak times. You’ll have to contend with crowded cars and higher rates if you choose to come right around Christmastime. In addition, weather-related road closures could delay your ride. In snowy weather, you’ll want to make sure your route to the train is clear. If the weather is very bad, check with the railroad to ensure the ride hasn’t been canceled. Although these cancellations are rare, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Once you’re on your way, make sure you and your children wear warm clothes, as it can get cold!

What You’ll Pay

The Polar Express Train Ride offers four classes for the trip, each with special perks and pricing. The most affordable option is the Coach Class, where you’ll pay $51 for adults and $35 for kids at peak times. Coach Class has smaller seats, but still provides heat and free hot cocoa and cookies for the trip. Above Coach Class is Crown Class, which features picture windows and magical decorations. Passengers get a free Polar Express Tumbler with their cocoa, for a price of $61 during peak times. The last two classes, Premium Crown and First, offer more comfortable cabins, better seats, and special souvenirs for a price of $71 and $77 per person. No matter which price point you choose, you’ll still experience all the magic of the Polar Express trip!

The Polar Express train ride offers magical family fun for kids of all ages. This Christmas, don’t miss the opportunity to give your kids the ride of a lifetime—and rekindle the Christmas spirit for yourself, too.
