SmokiEEEs is an extension of the Parks as Classrooms program supported by the GSMNP. The SmokiEEEs at Home program is an online resource for families and students. They are continually creating fun and exciting ways to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains from home. The three EEEs in the program name come from the themes they focus on: explore, escape, and entertain.
Explore
The “Explore” section of the site encourages students and families to go outside and safely explore their backyard or surrounding area. This section currently has three topics for inspiration. Learn about phenology, lichens, and how to make a backyard sound map.
How To Create a Sound Map
Ranger Rhonda explains a nature journaling exercise called sound mapping. This fun activity teaches you to explore your environment by using your ears! She’ll also give you tips on how to train yourself to hear sounds at different times of the day.
Learn About Phenology
Phenology is the study of nature’s cycles and how they affect plant and animal life. This video will give you an in-depth look at phenology and a deeper understanding of what it is. It also explains how you can join the Citizen Science Program and volunteer to collect phenology data.
All About Lichens
In this section, Dr. James Lendemer teaches all about lichens. You’ll learn the three different classifications, where to find them, and their essential role in ecosystem function. He explains why we need to think about lichens when it comes to our conservation strategies. Dr. Ledemer is considered one of the world’s top experts on lichens, so tune in and prepare to be amazed!
Entertain
Get ready for some original tunes by some talented students! This section has three different music videos covering the topics of black bears, lichens, and monarchs. All three videos are not only educational but entertaining as well!
The 5th graders of Rockford Elementary in East Tennessee worked with the Tremont Institute to bring you the fantastic music video “Lichens Are So Awesome.” These students do an outstanding job of mixing Lego animation and singing to bring you a very creative work of art.
Walland Elementary’s 5th-grade class (also in East Tennessee) does an excellent job of telling the story of the monarch butterfly and its path of migration. They also show some of their habitats and touch on several of the threats facing this magnificent creature.
The students of Gamble Montessori High School in Southwest Ohio partnered with the Tremont Institute to bring you another fun video about black bears. The students cover the history and importance of this animal as it pertains to the Appalachian mountains.
If you’re a student, these videos might inspire you to talk to your class about making a video of your own. If you know anyone who has created a fun music video about the environment or animals, contact the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.
Escape
The “Escape” section of the SmokiEEE’s site is all about relaxation. In this area, you will find videos about mountain streams in the Smokies, butterflies, and scenic footage. These videos are a great way to experience the Smokies when you can’t physically be there. SmokieEEEs will continue to add more content to this section, so be sure to check back often!
The SmokiEEEs program offers some great resources for you to explore the Great Smoky Mountains online. We hope you get the chance to experience the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in person, but if you are unable to venture out, you can still explore this natural treasure from home.
