Tips for Backpacking in the Winter

If you love the sound of fresh snow crunching beneath your feet, check out our suggestions for backpacking in the winter.

  1. Get good gear
While price can be a factor, budget-friendly options are available. You can buy used or rent gear, or opt for heavier equipment that might be cheaper.
  2. Wear the right clothes
Make sure if you’re not actively hiking (or if you are hiking in below-freezing weather) your head is covered. Plan to layer on your torso (a down parka is a good go-to) so you can remove some when you’re active or the temps start raising. This will also allow you to layer on for warmth when you’re camping. Gloves should be windproof, warm, and not too tight.
  3. Have the right footwear
Don’t skimp on the shoes and socks. Make sure you’re wearing waterproof boots and thick socks that still allow for wiggle room in the toes.
  4. Keep your pack accessible and simple
No one wants to rummage through a bunch of pockets and openings to find what they are looking for, especially if they have gloves on. Get a backpack with one compartment. If you need more space, attach bags to the outside of it.
  5. Bring two stoves
Just in case one fails and you need a stove, it’s always better to plan in advance. They can be a lifesaver in keeping you from getting dehydrated as melting snow is easy to do.
