Winter Activities in the Smokies

Don’t let cabin fever get you down this Winter. Head to the Great Smoky Mountains for breathtaking scenery, captivating wildlife, and unbeatable Christmas activities! Below we’ve rounded up our top three picks for full days of adventuring in Gatlinburg, TN, and the surrounding areas in the chilly months ahead.

Wildlife Viewing in Cades Cove

With all the thick, verdant foliage gone, now is your chance to catch glimpses of the fantastic wildlife that populate the Smokies. According to National Park Service, “Large numbers of white-tailed deer are frequently seen, and sightings of black bear, coyote, groundhog, turkey, raccoon, skunk, and other animals are also possible.” From October to April the road is open to motor vehicles from sunrise to sunset, with best wildlife viewing times being early morning and evening. Frequent road pullouts are provided to allow you to take in all the natural glory surrounding you at your leisure. Learn more at National Park Service’s page.

Ober Gatlinburg

Tennessee’s #1 skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing destination, you and your family are sure to have a blast at Ober Gatlinburg! Strap on your skis or jump on a snow tube for a day on the slopes, and get ready for an adrenaline-rush on their year-round mountain coaster. If you’re the more indoor-type, check out their Ice Skating Rink or Ice Bumper Cars, sure to be a time of fun for the whole family! Check out Ober Gatlinburg’s ticket packages and get ready to make some priceless wintertime memories.

Indoor Snow Tubing

Not a fan of cold weather, but love playing in the snow? Believe it or not, you can have both at Pigeon Forge Snow! At America’s first indoor snow park, you can play in their pure, additive-free snow (just like nature makes it!) all year round. Unlike outdoor snow tubing, there’s no need to plan your day around it. Show up when it’s most convenient for your schedule, and they’ll get you on the slopes!

Whatever your weather preferences when wintertime is upon us, the Great Smoky Mountains have something for everyone. Make some priceless family memories you’re sure to treasure this winter season and come back to visit Rafting in the Smokies in the summer!
