Spring Activities in the Smokies

Rafting in the Smokies is the Real Deal!

The warmer weather is moving in and snow is becoming a distant memory. What better time to enjoy the Smokies than in the Spring? While you’re waiting for the whitewater rafting season to get into full swing, we’ve picked out some other awesome activities you can enjoy in the spring.

Ripley’s Aquarium

This is a wonderful addition to any vacation, and an excellent option if you’re getting spring rain! If you have kids, they will love the indoor playground and kids touch pools. Visitors of any age will find the glass bottom boat ride a memorable trip, seeing the aquarium from an angle rarely viewed. It runs every 20 minutes, but can get sold out so make sure you book when you arrive.

Crave Golf Club

This attraction in Pigeon Forge is perfect for any time of year, because there is an indoor course! Recently opened in 2017, Crave Golf Club takes mini-golf to a whole new level with their “Crave style” spinners. Spin your way on each hole and earn prizes like a milkshake, or a new challenge, like putting while standing on one leg. Mini-bowling is also inside the facility, so if golf isn’t your thing, you have options!

Biltmore Estate

Only an hour and a half from our rafting location in Hartford, the Biltmore Estate is beautiful in springtime as the gardens brighten up with budding and blooming flowers surrounded by lush greenery. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the acres of gardens are a testament to the dedication of the experts preserving history, flora, and fauna. There are more than 250 varieties of roses in the Rose Garden and 2.5 miles of paths taking you along the French Broad River, Deer Park meadows, and forest. Check out their guide for what type of flowers you can see blooming throughout the year.

Local Craftsmen Shopping

The Glades community in Gatlinburg is full of local artisans and craftsmen with beautiful wares. While shopping can certainly be done at any time of year, spring allows for easier access to the area and many shops closed in the winter (or on limited schedules) open up. If you want to skip the drive to the Arts and Crafts Community, you can visit the 35th annual Easter Craft Show at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. It’s held March 29–31 starting at 10 a.m. daily. If you are more “hands-on,” you can learn how to make your own crafts with over 100 different classes offered at the Hands-On Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Weekend on April 13.
