Tips before you begin

If you’re new to the area check out Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s guide for everything you need to know about fishing licenses in the Smokies. The Smoky Mountain Angler is the oldest and best fly fishing outfitter and guide service in Gatlinburg. It is a resource for newbies and experts alike.

Where to Fish

The Smokies offer thousands of miles of mountain streams that wind through picturesque hollows and valleys. If you’re game for an uncertain adventure, pick a blue line on the map, find the lowest access point and follow it until you hit the end. You may just be surprised at the number of energetic brook trout you’ll find ready for the catching!

If you’re not so adventurous, then keep reading for our round-up of tried-and-true locations perfect for your next fishing trip.

Little River from the Sinks to Townsend

Known as the most popular fishing destination in the Smokies, the main section of the Little River is easily accessed by road and provides excellent opportunities for all skill levels. Brown, rainbow, and brook trout populate these beautiful, diverse waters. Due to the popularity of this spot, you should beware of crowds. This stretch is most accessible mid-week or in the spring or winter when the water is too cold for tubers.

Mynatt Park

If you’re a family of anglers, check out Mynatt Park for a children-only fishing destination. Fish from the bridge, or wade to the perfect spot in the stream. Mynatt Park is the perfect destination for a relaxing day of quality time fishing with your family and playing in the park.

Douglas Lake

Douglas Lake is an ideal location for an all-day fishing trip and is well suited to a variety of ages and expertise levels. The beautiful trout, crappies, bass, and bluegills are sure to keep your time interesting and enjoyable while surrounded by so much natural beauty.

Twentymile Creek

If you’re looking for a destination with fewer people and great fishing, Twentymile Creek may be just the spot for you! Accessible only by trail, this creek is fairly isolated with a mix of low pressure and ample aquatic nutrients allowing its rainbow trout to grow larger (on average) than other places in the park.

The Smokies are home to picturesque mountain streams and idyllic lakefronts. Whether you’ve been an angler all your life, or are looking to dabble in the recreation for the first time, you’ll feel right at home in the Great Smoky Mountains. Next time fishing’s on your mind, head to Gatlinburg and the surrounding areas for a rejuvenating and fulfilling time in Tennessee.

P.S – Love the aquatic world, but not a fan of fishing? Check out our partner package with Ripley’s Aquarium and spend the day surrounded by creatures from under the sea!
